The Umbwe route has a well-deserved reputation of being the most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the fast ascent to high altitude, this route does not provide the necessary stages for acclimatization. Although the number of people on this trail is very low, the chances of success are also low. Umbwe is considered to be very difficult, taxing route – one that should only be attempted by strong hikers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly to altitude.Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice
Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting
from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
WHY 6 DAYS UMBWE ROUTE
The Umbwe Route offers a very different Kilimanjaro experience from the more gradual Machame, Lemosho and Northern
Circuit routes. 1. A More Direct Approach
Umbwe is a direct southern approach to Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs steeply through forest and along narrow ridges
before reaching the Barranco area. 2. Dramatic Mountain Scenery
The route offers impressive views of Kilimanjaro's southern slopes, deep valleys, volcanic landscapes, giant vegetation
and the glaciers around Kibo. 3. Less Crowded Experience
Umbwe is generally quieter than some of Kilimanjaro's most popular routes, making it attractive to trekkers who prefer a
more adventurous atmosphere. 4. Barranco Wall
One of the highlights is the famous Barranco Wall, which you climb on Day 3. Although it looks intimidating, it is not a
technical rock-climbing route. Trekkers use hands and feet on some sections while following the established trail. 5. Southern Circuit and Summit Approach
After Barranco, the route follows the Southern Circuit through Karanga and Barafu before the summit attempt.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe
Elevation: Approximately 1,600 m to 2,850–2,900 m
Distance: Approximately 9–11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you will drive to the Umbwe Gate. After completing registration and meeting the mountain crew, your trek begins.
The trail initially passes through cultivated areas before entering the dense montane forest. The Umbwe Route is steep from the beginning, following a narrow ridge with sections of exposed roots, rocks and uneven ground.
Your guide will set a slow and comfortable pace, allowing you to conserve energy for the days ahead.
You will arrive at Umbwe Camp, where the crew will have prepared your tent and a hot meal.
Overnight: Umbwe Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: Approximately 2,850–2,900 m to 3,950–3,976 m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heather
After breakfast, you leave Umbwe Camp and continue climbing through the upper forest before entering the moorland and heath vegetation zone.
The trail becomes more open as you gain elevation. You will continue along the Umbwe ridge, with dramatic views appearing as the vegetation becomes shorter.
As you approach Barranco, you enter an alpine landscape characterized by giant senecios and lobelias.
The day ends at Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
Take time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the following day's hike.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp via Barranco Wall
Elevation: Approximately 3,950–3,976 m to 4,000–4,050 m
Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you begin one of the most memorable sections of the Umbwe Route.
The trail descends slightly into the Barranco ravine before climbing the famous Barranco Wall.
The wall is steep but does not require technical climbing equipment. Your experienced guide will help you choose the safest line and maintain a steady pace.
After reaching the top of the wall, the trail continues across a series of ridges and valleys before descending toward Karanga Valley.
A final climb takes you to Karanga Camp.
Although this is a relatively short hiking day, it is an important opportunity to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: Approximately 4,000–4,050 m to 4,650–4,700 m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu.
The trail climbs steadily through rocky alpine desert terrain. You will eventually reach Barafu Camp, the high camp used for the summit attempt.
Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the cold and exposed environment at this altitude.
From Barafu Camp, you may have impressive views toward Kibo and Mawenzi, depending on weather conditions.
You will have an early dinner and receive a summit briefing from your guide. Prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water and summit equipment before going to bed.
Try to get as much rest as possible because your summit attempt will begin around midnight.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp: Approximately 4,650–4,700 m
Stella Point: Approximately 5,739 m
Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m
Mweka Camp: Approximately 3,100 m
Hiking Time: Approximately 12–15 hours depending on conditions
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro trek.
You will wake around midnight and have a light meal and hot drink before beginning the summit climb.
The trail climbs slowly through rocky terrain toward Stella Point, located on the crater rim of Kibo.
Your guide will maintain a very slow pace, commonly described by the Swahili expression “pole pole”, which means “slowly slowly.”
At Stella Point, you will have a short rest before continuing around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
You will finally reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the incredible views when weather conditions allow. Your guide will assist with photographs and ensure you remain safe at this extreme altitude.
After the summit, you descend back toward Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp.
The descent is long, but reaching the lower altitude of Mweka Camp provides important recovery after the summit effort.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: Approximately 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Distance: Approximately 8–10 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the beautiful montane forest.
The trail becomes greener and more comfortable as you lose altitude.
At Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate if you successfully reached Stella Point or Uhuru Peak.
After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, you will be transferred back to Moshi.
Enjoy a hot shower, a comfortable hotel and a well-earned celebration after completing your Kilimanjaro adventure.
